Industry Link
http://www.industrylink.com/
This is a link to industry sites. Looks fairly well done
and quite professional. It covers all industries so it is necessary to
narrow the search for what you want to look at. Because it covers all industry
it is not that easy to locate specific material, the search system does
not provide good results without a lot of information and if you have that
much information you could go to the site in the first place.
IRIS Forest Products Industry Directory
http://primusweb.com/forest/
An excellent directory site focused on forest products.
A wide range of companies can be accessed through a logical menu. It also
includes a search facility to get quick access to a specific company (if
it is in the data base) or to a topic area. Has a Virtual Tours link
which has many useful sites that include both museum and forestry companies.
Steve Shooks Directory of Forest Products, Wood Science
and Marketing
http://www.forestdirectory.com
Probably the most complete listing of useful Internet
sites on forestry, wood products and marketing wood products. Lots of links,
good design, most serious searches of the Internet for forestry information
can start here rather than a search engine.
WWW Virtual Library: Forestry
http://www.metla.fi/info/vlib/Forestry/
Another major directory for access to world forestry
information, it has fewer links for wood products as it concentrates on
the forestry aspect. It provides a wide range of sites including discussion
groups and events
Government Sites
BC Government Information: BC STATS
http://www.bcstats.gov.bc.ca
This is the BC Statistical agency with a wide range of
statistics available, from population to economy to specific industry sectors.
A primary source of material for student research. The 1996 census is available.
Most material is accessible by anyone on the web though there is a subscriber
area. The "Forestry" section of the Quick Facts is a thorough look at the
industry in 1996 and useful for general information for teacher and students.
The more detailed material is generally available in pdf (Acrobat reader)
format but all of them can be readily downloaded.
Forest Renewal
www.forestrenewal.bc.ca/
Basically a promotional site for Forest Renewal BUT it
does give reasonable detail on projects currently funded so you can get
a picture of the kind of initiatives being followed in BC. They have now added a teacher's guide (which can be downloaded) and a virtual museum experience, quite well done and valuable for forestry information.
Forestry Australia
http://www.nafi.com.au/
A well designed site with lots of good resources about
the Australian industry. Includes a showcase of outstanding products, forestry
information, and current issues. There is a student and teachers section
as well as a magazine "Timber Trek" designed for students.. An excellent
site, good for students to research and play in.
Industry Canada
http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/engdoc/sitemap.html
This is the best starting access to the wide range of
information available from Industry Canada. The Canadian Company
database is worth the whole site. Nice project to have students pull up
the company data and get the reports for each of the companies in the local
area that in the data base. Gives a good idea of company size, markets,
products.
Canada: Residential Furniture Sector
http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/sc_indps/sectors/engdoc/resf_hpg.html
This is the direct access to the furniture information
in the database. Along with a wide range of reports the most recent
"Benchmark Study" (January 1998) is a thorough look at the furniture industry
in Canada along with "best practices" examples.
National Forestry Database Program
http://www.nrcan.gc.ca/cfs/proj/iepb/nfdp/
This provides 1995 and some 1996 forestry statistics.
Very complete Canadian information, more useful for Forestry students but
still has good data on the forest inventory. Useful site for information
when students do a simulation.
Pacific Forestry Centre
http://www.pfc.forestry.ca/
A significant amount of forestry related information with
some focus on aboriginal land claims issues. Good material and good link
into other government forestry sites. Primarily of interest to forestry
students but an excellent overview of material on B.C.
USDA Forest Service
http://www.fs.fed.us/
This is the main access site to the US Forest Service
material, very comprehensive and lots of data to be dug out of the corners.
It has a good index that is easy to use and lots of links to other locations.
Depending on your situation you may be interested in the software that
can be downloaded from the service, mostly focused on forestry issues,
and the national database material that is available on the web.
USDA Forest Service: Forest Products Laboratory (FPL)
http://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/
This is one of the key sites for students to obtain on-line
research papers and information on a wide range of forest products.
They provide an extensive publication list on topics like "Decay processes
and Bioprocessing", "Durability" and "Papermaking and Recycling".
Most of the papers are available on line as Acrobat Reader (PDF) documents
so they must be downloaded first and read using the Acrobat software but
it is worth the work.
US Forestry Service/ Virginia Tech: Southern Research
Station
http://www.se4702.forprod.vt.edu/
Good material here on a range of automation projects like
process control, CT Scan, and Computer vision . They provide an excellent
listing of their 20 most recent publications in PDF format, all focused
on wood products, for example " Potential material sources for board products:
used pallets and wastewood at landfills". The list of their standard
documents, again available over the web, has many topics of use to students.
Treevia
http://vp.schoolnet.ca/virtprod/TREEVIA/gcg/treevia.html
Hosted in School Net by the Canadian Ministers of forestry
this is a fairly comprehensive quiz about forestry, ecology and wood products.
It will tell you how much you know but it takes about 20 minutes to complete
with lots of traffic between you and School Net to get your questions marked.
