Overview

The Wood Technics-Manufacturing major at FVTC is recognized by the industry as one of the best in the US. (In 1996, it was selected as "Educator of the Year" by the Woodworking Machinery Importers Association.)

FVTC has created a "hands-on, high-tech" program that provides students with opportunities to learn skills that are in current demand.

From hand tools, through computer-controlled (CNC) production equipment, and from print reading to finishing, FVTC students follow an intensive schedule of learning to become "state-of-the-art" woodworkers.

Beginning with the application of basic woodworking machine skills, students advance to large production machinery, learn to plan and manufacture face-frame cabinets, frameless cabinets (32mm process), then hardwood furniture casegoods and finally leg & rail furniture.

The design and use of jigs & fixtures is an important part of the process.

Our students also learn CAD/CAM, profile knife grinding, and a course called "Workplace Reality". This course covers many of the concepts that will confront them daily on the job: Quality concepts, Teamwork, statistical process control, written and verbal communications, OSHA and EPA regulations, first-aid & CPR.

Graduates leave with skills that can make them productive from the first day on the job, no matter what part of the industry they enter.
