Loewen Windows has its origins in Loewen Millwork, founded in 1905, when C.T. Loewen left the family farm to venture into the lumber business at a sawmill southeast of Steinbach, Manitoba.
In 1910, an office handling building material was opened on Steinbach's Main Street. Seven years later the first wood working machinery was purchased and the manufacturing of window and sash began.
In 1932, there was a renewed interest in the art of honey production that led to manufacturing of beekeeping supplies, with a mail order service for the apiarists in western Canada.
The production of these supplies proved to be a boon, not only for the Loewen establishment, but also for several other firms who built subsidiary parts for the bee equipment. However, in 1947 a sharp decline in the beekeeping industry made it imperative to look for alternative products.
One such product came out as a result of the Manitoba government's rural electrification program, which required some large orders for hydro pole crossarms. Church pews were also manufactured during the slow winter months.
In 1948, Loewen Windows began selling through lumber yards, a change that dramatically increased sales volume. A new 57,000 sq. ft. plant was started on the outskirts of Steinbach in 1960, which has been expanded several times since then to its current 412,000 square foot size.
In December, 1971, C.P. Loewen acquired sole ownership for the millwork manufacturing plant and its branches in Edmonton and Kitchener. It was to be called Loewen Millwork. The company grew steadily through the next two decades.
However, looking for new growth opportunities, Loewen added the vast US market to its prairie and Ontario markets in 1990, then British Columbia and Japan in 1991. These expansion moves have greatly increased sales and revenue to the company, as well as adding 325 new jobs to the Steinbach area.
Today, Loewen Windows stands at the forefront of high quality, high performance
wood window and door products. It is a company with the products and experience
to meet the next century with confidence and great expectations.
